Am I Crazy? October 1, 1999, Tucson, Arizona

That’s the title of the first chapter of a guidebook entitled “Driving through Latin America.” That’s what many people ask me when I tell them what I’m going to do. The guidebook says, “Don’t worry, there are hundreds of travelers driving to Central America every year.” But, the State Department says there are hundreds of foreigners kidnapped in Colombia every year. You do the math. Okay, so I’ll do what I can to avoid Colombia. But keeping a little perspective, there are cities in the good ol’ USA where hundreds of people are murdered each year! No one would ask me if I was crazy for visiting those cities. We live in a very dangerous country. But it’s our country. We know it. Fear of the unknown begs the question that I don’t quite know how to answer. Sure I’m crazy. My pirate friend who helped inspire this trip said in a song: “If we weren’t all crazy we would go insane.”
